Merida is a big city by most standards of the Yucatan peninsula. It has about 1 million people and has a similar layout to Atlanta. What I mean by the Atlanta reference is the airport is on the south end of the city. It has a perimeter like 285 called the Periférico. The north side is the more affluent area of the city. There are developments inside the perimeter (ITP) and outside the perimeter (OTP), like the Yucatan Country Club, La Ceiba, and the Polo club. Unlike Atlanta, with its huge sprawl, you can get to just about anywhere in the city in under 30 minutes by car. Realistically most commutes are less than 20.
